A vertical panel frames him against a diagonal striped backdrop in pale grey-blue and yellow-green, and the tan paper tone and black ink lines carry the whole image. The palette is restrained, which lets the posture and the bold outline do the work.

Meaning & Symbolism

Yakusha-e were commissioned portraits of Kabuki actors, so the print records a real performer in a role of rank and prestige. Ichikawa Danjūrō V was among the most celebrated actors of his time, and casting him as a samurai of high station signals the dramatic power of the stage. Shunshō made this around 1778, in the late eighteenth century, when woodblock actor prints were a central part of Edo popular culture.

Crafted for the Cut Edge

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the robed figure and the striped panel can sit as a single shape on whatever surface it joins. The design is best seen close, where the black ink lines and the stripes read clearly, making this a fitting piece for collectors of Japanese theatre prints who want the artwork on a personal surface.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunsh-the-fifth-ichikawa-danjuro-as-a-samurai-of-high-rank-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-676-alt-3.webp?v=1785711457
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunsh-the-fifth-ichikawa-danjuro-as-a-samurai-of-high-rank-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
