A tall wooden signpost rises beside the standing figure, and the actor fills the vertical space of the sheet, with his stick and robe carrying the eye upward. The robe is patterned with leaves, and the palette stays within warm beige, mauve brown, olive green, yellow ochre and salmon red, the traditional pigments of the medium. A straw bundle sits at the base of the scene. The signpost carries the characters 右 and 左, meaning right and left, and the artist's signature 春章画 appears in the print itself.

Meaning & Symbolism

The mile post, a marker of distance along Edo-period roads, places the figure on a journey and anchors the scene in the travel culture of the period. The kago, a palanquin carried by bearers, makes the role a familiar one to audiences of the day. Kabuki actors were portrayed in prints like this one, and the detailed character studies of the Katsukawa school made the performer's presence the point of the image. Shunshō was a central figure of 18th-century ukiyo-e, and this work dates to around 1783–84, a moment when Kabuki portraiture was at its height in Edo.

On the Kiss-Cut Stickers

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the tall figure and signpost become the shape of the object itself rather than sitting inside a square border. The design reads as a single silhouette with the signature and characters given space to show, which suits a format that is held and placed by hand. Each sticker carries the print's composition in its cut edge, so the outline of the actor and signpost is the first thing seen when it is applied.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunsh-the-fifth-ichikawa-danjuro-as-a-kago-bearer-standing-near-a-mile-post-ca-178384-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-668-alt-3.webp?v=1785712439
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunsh-the-fifth-ichikawa-danjuro-as-a-kago-bearer-standing-near-a-mile-post-ca-178384-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
