Mount Fuji sits in the background, anchoring the scene in its Japanese setting. The palette is restrained and warm, dominated by cream and pale grey, with mustard gold, olive green and peach picked out across the costumes and ground. A small signature in Japanese characters, 春章画, reads "painted by Shunshō" and sits in the margin.

Meaning & Symbolism

The subject is an onnagata, the specialised tradition in Kabuki where male actors perform women's roles with stylised gesture, costume and expression. The flat straw hat is the defining prop of the portrait, marking the character and the theatre world it came from. The print is a window onto Edo-period culture, when Kabuki actors were celebrated subjects for Ukiyo-e artists and their likenesses circulated as collectable images of the stage.

Where This Print Lives on a Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the image is framed by its silhouette rather than a rectangle. That suits a print built on vertical panels and a single striking profile: the hat, the costume and the pale ground read as one shape. Placed on a journal, laptop or notebook, the sticker carries a piece of Kabuki history into everyday objects, giving collectors of Japanese art a compact way to keep the theatre close at hand.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunsh-the-actor-nakamura-tomijuro-as-a-tall-woman-in-a-flat-straw-hat-ca-1778-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-622-alt-3.webp?v=1785713712
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunsh-the-actor-nakamura-tomijuro-as-a-tall-woman-in-a-flat-straw-hat-ca-1778-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
