The palette runs on dusty mauve, pale pink, cream, olive green and coral red, layered in the flat, saturated colour fields typical of nishiki-e. A pattern of stripes runs through the garments and gives the composition its rhythm. Circular crests mark the costume, and the crest-marked kataginu sits over the body. The katana held in hand and the wakizashi at the hip anchor the figure's silhouette. A small signature, 春章画, appears in the panel.

Meaning & Symbolism

The print belongs to the Ukiyo-e movement and dates to 1771–72, the late Edo period. Its subject is Matsumoto Kōshirō II, a celebrated Kabuki star, shown in a samurai role. Actor portraits of this kind were how audiences kept track of their favourite performers, and the stylised face, bold line and dramatic pose record the theatre itself. The samurai costume and weapons carry the wider weight of the warrior class, so the image holds both a stage performance and the history it borrowed from.

Shunshō's Hand on the Blade's Edge

A sticker is cut to its own outline, so the kiss-cut follows the samurai's silhouette and the edges of the crest and blades rather than a rectangle. The figure reads as a single shape, which suits a sticker that sits on a laptop lid, a journal cover or a notebook as a standalone piece. Each one carries a small, dramatic slice of Edo theatre to wherever it lands.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunsh-the-actor-matsumoto-koshiro-2nd-as-a-samurai-177172-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-594-alt-3.webp?v=1785714142
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunsh-the-actor-matsumoto-koshiro-2nd-as-a-samurai-177172-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
