Brick red and black carry the most weight, set against pale cream and taupe grey, with ochre yellow accents and a pale beige striped ground behind the actor. The pose is angular and exaggerated, the limbs held wide and the blade cutting a sharp diagonal through the space. A square crest sits on the garment, and a sheathed katana is visible at the back. Small signature characters, 春章画, appear within the print, reading as Shunshō's mark.

Meaning & Symbolism

The scene belongs to the aragoto ("rough") style of Kabuki, in which heroes are shown with bold, painted faces, oversized gestures and weapons held in frozen poses. The drawn sword is the signature of the Shibaraku hero, whose entrance halts a scene and announces the power of the character. Printed around 1781, the image records the popular theatre of Edo-period Japan, where actors were celebrated as stars and their roles were sold as prints.

Turning the Print into a Cut Outline

A kiss-cut sticker takes the shape of its own artwork, so the actor's silhouette, the raised blade and the angled stance define the edge of the piece. Where a print normally sits inside a frame, this one stands on its own outline, letting the dramatic pose read as a single bold shape wherever it is placed. For collectors of Kabuki and ukiyo-e, it brings a stage moment onto laptops, journals and notebooks.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunsh-the-actor-ishikawa-danjuro-v-performing-a-shibaroku-act-with-a-drawn-sword-in-his-hand-ca-1781-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-588-alt-3.webp?v=1785714236
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunsh-the-actor-ishikawa-danjuro-v-performing-a-shibaroku-act-with-a-drawn-sword-in-his-hand-ca-1781-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
