Their postures create the tension of the scene. A lacquered tray with cups sits beside them, and a broom and drifts of snow sit in the setting. The palette is restrained and layered: pale ochre, sage green, warm grey-brown, vermilion accents and pale pink. The composition rises in a tall vertical format, and the signature 春章画 appears in the artwork itself.

Meaning & Symbolism

Shunshō made this as a yakusha-e, an actor print, a genre that let theatre audiences in Edo keep the faces and gestures of their favourite performers. The scene comes from Kawaranu Hana Sakae Hachinoki, staged at the Nakamura-za theatre, with Nakamura Utaemon I playing Karashi Baba and Ichikawa Danjūrō IV playing Sanshodayu. The print records character emotion and stage energy at a specific moment in the 1769 season, and it stands as a cultural record of Edo-period theatre.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the tall rectangle and the circular crest become the edge of the object itself. The figures, tray and snow can be read as a single silhouette rather than a framed picture. The kiss-cut method also leaves the backing intact, so the sticker lifts cleanly from its sheet and goes where the collector chooses to place it.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunsh-scene-from-the-second-act-of-the-drama-kawaranu-hana-sakae-hachinoki-12th-month-1769-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-544-alt-3.webp?v=1785714925
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunsh-scene-from-the-second-act-of-the-drama-kawaranu-hana-sakae-hachinoki-12th-month-1769-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
