The actor wears a patterned kimono with a sword at his side, and the hemp-leaf motif in the robe gives the costume its rhythm. Apricot, cream, salmon red, and sage green sit against deep black linework, with indigo and ochre adding depth. Beside the figure, wooden sake barrels and a barrel bearing a sign anchor the scene, while an angled roof sets the stage. A Japanese inscription cartouche reading 勝川春章画 marks the artist's signature.

Meaning & Symbolism

Yakusha-e, or actor prints, were the celebrity portraits of Edo-period Japan, and this one captures Ichikawa Yaozō II in the role of Soga no Gorō, a character from the famous Soga brothers' revenge story, performed at the Nakamura Theatre. The stance and the sharp, expressive face freeze a dramatic moment of storytelling. The print offers a direct view into the theatre culture and fan following of 18th-century Edo.

On the Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker follows the exact outline of the artwork, so the actor, his sword, and the barrels stand on their own once applied. The design reads as a single silhouette of figure and props, which suits a shape cut close to its edges and kept in view at arm's length.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunsh-kabuki-actor-ichikawa-yaoz-ii-1770-2nd-month-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-492-alt-3.webp?v=1785715774
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunsh-kabuki-actor-ichikawa-yaoz-ii-1770-2nd-month-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
