A crouching figure in a white robe wears stylised face paint and dominates the frame. Beside it, a figure grips a tall staff with a tassel, and a kneeling figure in a patterned robe carries circular roundel crests. The palette is restrained: off-white, olive green, dark taupe, salmon red and pale yellow-green. Those earth tones and the flat, bold outlines of the woodblock style give the scene its theatrical weight.

Meaning & Symbolism

Yakusha-e, or actor portraiture, was a popular print genre in Edo-period Japan, where audiences collected likenesses of their favourite performers. Ichikawa Danjūrō IV was one of the most celebrated Kabuki actors of his age, and Shunshō's print records his presence rather than a single moment of plot. The roundel crests act as family and role markers, tying the figures to the theatre's lineage and to the stage's visual language of identity.

Why It Works on a Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its design, so the tall figures and crest shapes of this print read as a single object on a page or surface. It suits smooth flat surfaces such as laptops, journals and windows, where the portrait can sit as a small, collectible piece of Edo theatre close to the eye.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunsh-kabuki-actor-ichikawa-danjr-iv-12th-month-1771-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-478-alt-3.webp?v=1785716333
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunsh-kabuki-actor-ichikawa-danjr-iv-12th-month-1771-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
