A tall vertical format holds the standing actor, whose overrobe is patterned with a hexagonal tile motif that repeats across the figure. He grips a long sword held upright, while a figure with long grey hair anchors the lower edge. The coins scatter through open space above the basin, so the eye travels from the struck vessel to the arc of gold and back down through the figure's stance.

Meaning & Symbolism

Shunshō made yakusha-e, actor prints, that served as portraits of stage performers for an audience of theatre-goers in Edo. Chiyosaki is a dramatic role, and the striking of the chozubachi is a moment of stylised theatre: the gesture is exaggerated so that motion and sudden release read clearly from a distance. Gold coins falling from a blow carry associations of fortune and sudden wealth, so the image joins spectacle with a note of luck. The work belongs to the Kabuki tradition that shaped Japanese theatre history and to the Edo period that produced it.

Crafted for the Cut Edge

A kiss-cut sticker takes the outline of its artwork, so the shape of this print becomes the shape of the object. The tall figure and the falling arc of coins can be framed by the cut itself, turning the sticker into a small piece of stage. Held close, the hexagonal overrobe and the grain of the woodblock-style colour reward a slow look, the way a collector studies a print in hand.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunsh-ikunojo-iii-as-chiyosaki-striking-the-chozubachi-a-shower-of-gold-coin-flies-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-474-alt-3.webp?v=1785716498
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunsh-ikunojo-iii-as-chiyosaki-striking-the-chozubachi-a-shower-of-gold-coin-flies-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
