A long sword rests against the figure, and its diagonal line carries the eye across the composition. Behind him hangs a curtain bearing a large white flower crest, while a nested square crest and an octagonal crest frame add layered geometry. The palette is restrained: vermilion red, pale sage, cream, olive gold and black, with the red figure dominating the page.

Meaning & Symbolism

Shibaraku is one of the signature plays of the Ichikawa family, and its moment of dramatic interruption, when the hero calls for the action to stop, is the stage convention this print freezes. Hannya no Gorō is the heroic role the actor performs, and the crests and bold posture signal the forceful, stylised acting of the Edo period. Shunshō was a master of yakusha-e, the actor portrait tradition that recorded the stars of late eighteenth-century Kabuki for theatre audiences and collectors.

Sticker Cut to the Hero's Outline

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the tall rectangle, crest shapes and sword line of this print can be cut as the artwork's own silhouette rather than a boxed image. Each sticker is cut to the lines of the Shibaraku composition, bringing a moment from the Kabuki stage onto a laptop, journal or any flat surface a collector chooses.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunsh-ichikawa-danjuro-v-in-a-shibaraku-role-ca-1779-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-462-alt-3.webp?v=1785716997
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunsh-ichikawa-danjuro-v-in-a-shibaraku-role-ca-1779-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
