Its palette is restrained: warm grey, ochre, charcoal black, rust red and pale cream, the colours of an autumn twilight. Reeds line the shoreline, a distant island sits low on the horizon, and two birds cross the open space. The standing man in a black robe and the woman in a grey robe with a hair ornament anchor the lower half. Calligraphy runs vertically inside the cloud cartouche, and the printed characters 三夕和歌, 西行 and 春章画 name the series, the poet and the artist.

Meaning & Symbolism

Katsukawa Shunshō (1726–1792) made this Nishiki-e woodblock print in the late eighteenth century, illustrating a poem by the medieval monk-poet Saigyō from the series Sanseki waka, or Three Evening Poems. The verse reflects on the melancholy of an autumn evening, and the snipe taking flight over the marsh carries that feeling of solitude and the passing beauty of the natural world. The cloud cartouche gives the poem its own place within the picture, so text and image read as one act of looking.

Shaped to Its Own Outline

A kiss-cut sticker follows the exact contour of its artwork, so the tall sheet, the cartouche and the flight of the birds appear on a surface as a single shape. Placed on a journal, a laptop or a window, the print reads as an object in its own right, with the reeds and the marsh framing the surface around it. It suits collectors who value Edo-period woodblock design and anyone drawn to the mood of Saigyō's verse.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunsh-autumn-evening-a-poem-by-saigy-from-the-series-sanseki-waka-late-18th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-424-alt-3.webp?v=1785718693
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunsh-autumn-evening-a-poem-by-saigy-from-the-series-sanseki-waka-late-18th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
