The bald wrestler at the left wears a white robe patterned with clouds and a red sash. The central figure wears a grey robe worked with a key-fret pattern under a dusty purple overrobe, and he holds a sword. The wrestler at the right, in a dark robe, carries a bundle of straw rope. Against the sage green, pale grey and near-black tones, the key-fret lattice behind them gives the composition its rhythm. The names 小野川 (Onogawa), 勢見山 (Seimiyama), 八ヶ峯 (Yatsugamine) and the artist's signature 春好画 appear in the print itself.

Meaning & Symbolism

Shunkō's sheet belongs to the Katsukawa school of ukiyo-e, and it records the Edo period's celebrated athletes as people with lives beyond the ring. The sword, the rope and the relaxed, walking stance show the rikishi in daily settings, and the fret pattern and cloud motif are classic markers of the period's printmaking. Each name is written beside its figure, so the print works as a portrait of three specific wrestlers as well as a scene of Edo street life.

Why This Sticker Works

A kiss-cut sticker is trimmed to its own outline, so the wrestlers' silhouettes and the edges of their robes define the shape you see. The tall figures suit a sticker that is cut close to the artwork and placed where it can be read at a glance, such as on a journal cover or a laptop lid. Each figure can be seen in full, which makes this a fitting object for anyone drawn to Edo-period prints and the people who lived them.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunk-three-sum-wrestlers-onogawa-seimiyama-and-yatsugamine-ca-1790s-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-388-alt-3.webp?v=1785720259
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunk-three-sum-wrestlers-onogawa-seimiyama-and-yatsugamine-ca-1790s-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
