Two standing figures dominate the frame: one wears a black kimono patterned with star-shaped crests, the other a black kimono with a hair ornament. A man holding a folded fan appears in an orange floral kimono, giving the scene its warmest accent. Black, tan, ochre yellow, salmon orange and pale beige sit across the palette, and a small inscription, 春好画, marks the print's authorship. The star-shaped motif repeats through the garments, a stylised rhythm that holds the eye on the two performers.

Meaning & Symbolism

The print belongs to the Edo-period tradition of actor portraiture, where celebrated Kabuki performers were rendered as recognisable public figures. Here the pairing is staged as a romance, so the image joins theatrical performance with the emotional connection of its lovers. Shunkō, working in the late eighteenth century, drew on the vivid colour and expressive gesture of Japanese woodblock printing to make the performers iconic. Kabuki theatre, romantic drama and Edo culture are the themes the work carries.

Designed for the Sticker Blade

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the tall figures and the star-patterned kimono edges become the sticker's silhouette rather than a rectangle around them. Each piece keeps the print's theatrical stance and colour blocks intact, turning a small object into a fan-culture collectible for anyone who follows Kabuki or ukiyo-e.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunk-the-third-segawa-sojuro-and-the-third-segawa-kikunojo-as-lovers-ca-1779-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-386-alt-3.webp?v=1785720332
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunk-the-third-segawa-sojuro-and-the-third-segawa-kikunojo-as-lovers-ca-1779-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
