Behind her, a flowering branch and a shoji screen set a quiet interior, while a low wooden railing with potted plants anchors the lower edge. The palette is restrained: pale cream, golden yellow, black, dusty blue-grey and peach, with the black and gold of the kimono drawing the eye first. Small printed characters, 春好画, sit within the image as a signature.

Meaning & Symbolism

The figure is Segawa Kikunojo III, a leading Kabuki performer, shown in an onnagata role, the tradition in which male actors portray women. The image therefore holds a performance within a performance: a man's craft of embodying femininity, staged on the Edo theatre stage and preserved in print. The fan, the blossoms and the screen are conventions of theatrical beauty, signalling elegance and the poise the role demands. Katsukawa Shunkō produced the print around 1780, during the height of popular actor prints, when these portraits circulated as fashionable collectibles.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is trimmed to the outline of its own design, so the kimono, fan and figure stand on their own without a surrounding border. That suits a print built on a strong silhouette and a single dominant figure. Because the artwork is cut to its edges, it reads as an object placed onto a surface rather than a framed picture, much like the prints once pasted into albums and folding screens.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunk-the-actor-segawa-kikunojo-3rd-in-a-female-role-ca-1780-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-338-alt-3.webp?v=1785722075
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunk-the-actor-segawa-kikunojo-3rd-in-a-female-role-ca-1780-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
