Pale grey-green and white snow fill the upper field, while the dark brown bodies of the oxen anchor the lower half. The actor holds a large wide-brimmed hat overhead, its circular brim a strong counterpoint to the vertical portrait panel. A second ox, marked by an ochre yellow saddle cloth, follows behind, and a rust red accent sits among the pale cream tones. A flowering plum branch enters the frame, and the artist's signature, 勝川春好画, appears in the margin.

Meaning & Symbolism

Katsukawa Shunkō (1743–1812) made this print around 1790, during the Edo period, when Kabuki actors were among the most recognisable figures in Japanese popular culture. Portraits of performers like Matsumoto Kōshirō IV were sold to audiences who followed the theatre closely. The snowstorm sets a cold, elemental mood typical of winter scenes, and the blooming plum, which flowers while snow still lies on the ground, signals endurance through hardship. Together, the actor, the animals and the weather turn an ordinary journey into a stage for drama.

How the Artwork Lives on Stickers

Because each sticker is cut to the outline of its own artwork, the image keeps its tall portrait silhouette, the swirl of the storm and the hat's round brim intact. It suits smooth, flat surfaces such as laptops, journals and windows, where the figures can be seen up close, the way a print in an album would be handled. Each cut is a small piece of Edo theatre placed where you spend your time.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunk-the-actor-matsumoto-koshiro-iv-on-a-bullock-in-a-snowstorm-ca-1790-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-324-alt-3.webp?v=1785722604
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunk-the-actor-matsumoto-koshiro-iv-on-a-bullock-in-a-snowstorm-ca-1790-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
