Black line work defines the actor's robes and the sharp angles of the open fan, which carries the eye across the upper half of the image. Pale peach, ochre yellow and cream fill the surfaces, while grey-green anchors the lower section beneath a rocky outcrop. Oval floral motifs repeat across the kimono, giving the costume a rhythm that contrasts with the stillness of the pose. A blossoming cherry branch sits beside the figure, and a katana at the waist adds a hard edge to the composition. The characters 春好画 appear within the design, the artist's identifying mark.

Meaning & Symbolism

The fan and the cherry blossom carry the imagery of the stage, where a single gesture can hold an entire scene. The katana signals the samurai roles that kabuki audiences of the Edo period knew well and came to see. Sawamura Sōjūrō III was among the prominent actors of his day, and Shunkō's portrait records his presence as much as his costume. Produced around 1779, the print belongs to the Ukiyo-e tradition of woodblock portraiture that made actors into popular figures of the floating world.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker takes the shape of its artwork, so the outline of this tall panel, with its rising fan and blossoming branch, becomes the sticker's own edge. The image is seen at close range, read the way a collector reads a print in hand, with the fan and the actor's face forming the first point of attention. Placed on a journal cover, a laptop lid or a window, the cut outline lets the actor stand alone against the surface beneath him.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunk-the-actor-3rd-sawamura-sojuro-holding-an-open-fan-ca-1779-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-340-alt-3.webp?v=1785722001
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunk-the-actor-3rd-sawamura-sojuro-holding-an-open-fan-ca-1779-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
