His deep red cloak and checked scarf are the strongest colour in the image, set against black, cream and the soft salmon and gold-tan of the night sky and ground. Behind him, a bamboo fence stands in snow, and the falling flakes are rendered as pale marks across the dark field. The sword stays sheathed, so the tension comes from stillness rather than action. In the margin, the characters 春好画 carry the artist's name, Shunkō, and the word for picture.

Meaning & Symbolism

The print presents Onoe Matsusuke in character rather than as himself, a convention of Edo-period theatrical portraiture that made the actor's role the subject. Snow, night and the fence set the scene as a winter stage, while the drawn-in pose and the sheathed blade hold a moment of readiness. The work belongs to the 1780s, when kabuki and ukiyo-e fed each other, and it stands as a record of how performers were pictured for a city audience that followed both.

On the Kiss-Cut Stickers

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the dark figure, red cloak and fence lines carry the print's silhouette onto whatever surface they meet. The composition is built around one standing form, which suits a sticker that is seen up close and read at a glance. Apply it where the figure can be the only thing in view, and the stillness of the snowy night does the rest.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunk-onoe-matsusuke-as-man-armed-with-a-sword-standing-in-snow-before-a-fence-1786-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-302-alt-3.webp?v=1785723611
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunk-onoe-matsusuke-as-man-armed-with-a-sword-standing-in-snow-before-a-fence-1786-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
