A persimmon-red robe dominates the lower half, its surface broken by a repeating pattern of concentric squares. Above it, the actor's face is set in traditional white makeup, sharpened by bold red lines around the eyes and brows, and framed by an ornate black-and-white headdress and elaborate wig. The palette is restricted to deep crimson, stark white and black, with cream and pale beige in the paper tones. Bold outlines hold every form in place, so the eye settles on the face and its fixed stare.

Meaning & Symbolism

The concentric squares are the mimasu, the family crest of the Ichikawa lineage, and their presence on the robe identifies the actor's house as clearly as his face does. The mie itself is a held, theatrical stance meant to hold an audience in a single heartbeat of tension. Katsukawa Shunkō (1743–1812) was a leading Ukiyo-e printmaker of the Edo period, and this sheet preserves the popular celebrity culture of the Edo-period theatre district, where actors were collected and recognised by their crests and poses.

Designed for the Sticker Format

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the robe's strong red silhouette and the headdress's hard edges translate directly into the die line. The figure's bold contours survive the cut without losing their force. Peeled onto a laptop, journal or notebook, the print reads as a single, self-contained portrait with its crest intact, the way a collector would hold a print in hand.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunk-ichikawa-monnosuke-ii-in-a-shibaraku-performance-1780-anei-9-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-258-alt-3.webp?v=1785725486
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunk-ichikawa-monnosuke-ii-in-a-shibaraku-performance-1780-anei-9-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
