The palette is restrained: pale cream ground, mustard yellow, and black. An arched black window frame encloses the scene, and a lacquered black chest patterned with gold lattice sits beside the figure. A pine branch reaches into the frame, giving the composition its seasonal note. The figure's stance and costume draw the eye first, and the decorative detail of the chest and garments rewards a closer look.

Meaning & Symbolism

Onnagata were male actors who performed female characters, and the art of that performance was central to Kabuki. Segawa Kikunojo III was one of the most admired onnagata of his time, and Shunjō's print records his stage presence as the theatre's audiences would have known it. The work belongs to the ukiyo-e tradition, which made actors and courtesans into popular subjects for the urban townspeople of Edo. Prints like this circulated as affordable souvenirs of the theatre, so the image carries both the artistry of the performer and the fan culture around him.

Built to the Outline of a Figure

A kiss-cut sticker follows the exact contour of its artwork, so the figure, hat and chest can stand on their own once the surrounding vinyl is removed. The cut outline becomes part of the design, letting the actor's silhouette sit directly on whatever surface it is placed on, with no border around it.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunj-the-actor-segawa-kikunojo-3rd-in-a-female-role-ca-1785-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-232-alt-3.webp?v=1785726902
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunj-the-actor-segawa-kikunojo-3rd-in-a-female-role-ca-1785-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
