The figure stands in a black haori over the striped robe, and a smaller figure in grey kimono sits beside him. Behind them a checkered wall forms a square grid, and the vertical panel layout keeps the eye moving up through the costume. Fine linework and sharp colour contrast carry the whole composition, with the artist's signature 春英画 inscribed in the print.

Meaning & Symbolism

The onnagata was central to kabuki, where male actors built their artistry on the precise construction of female presence, and this print records that craft at its height. Katsukawa Shun'ei was a master of the actor print, and his portraits of stage performers were made to be collected and remembered by theatre audiences of the Edo period. The striped kimono is the costume of the role itself, so the print celebrates both the performer and the fashion he made visible.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the kimono, the figures and the grid of the wall stand as they do in the print, with no border around them. The design is close-viewed, the way a collector reads a woodblock sheet, and the cut shape lets the artwork sit exactly where it is placed. For fans of kabuki and Ukiyo-e, this sticker turns a Shun'ei actor portrait into an object that can be placed and kept.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunei-wakayama-tomisaburo-as-a-woman-in-a-yellow-and-red-brown-striped-kimono-ca-1798-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-162-alt-3.webp?v=1785731617
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunei-wakayama-tomisaburo-as-a-woman-in-a-yellow-and-red-brown-striped-kimono-ca-1798-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
