He wears a green striped haori over a brown kimono, and geta sandals anchor the base of the composition. A blossoming branch rises beside him, adding a soft counterpoint to the strong, angular lines of the costume. The palette runs on pale salmon, sage green, warm grey, mauve brown and mustard yellow, a restrained set of tones that lets the stripes and contours carry the drama. The signature 春英画 sits in the margin, marking the work as Shun'ei's.

Meaning & Symbolism

Ukiyo-e actor prints, known as yakusha-e, recorded the stars of the Edo-period stage for an audience that followed Kabuki closely. Shun'ei made this print around 1792, within the Katsukawa school, and its emphasis is on character study: the actor's posture and expression convey the intensity that defined Kabuki performance. Ōtani Oniji III was a celebrated performer of his day, and the print preserves his stage presence as a window into the theatre of late eighteenth-century Japan.

Built for the Sticker's Own Outline

A kiss-cut sticker follows the contour of its artwork, so the figure, branch and sandals read as a single shape rather than a framed picture. Its vertical format suits flat surfaces such as journals, laptops and window glass, where the portrait can be seen up close. Placed on a notebook cover or a desk accessory, the actor's striking pose becomes part of everyday objects for collectors of Japanese woodblock prints and Kabuki fans.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/katsukawa-shunei-the-actor-otani-oniji-iii-17621819-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KTSSHN-2X2-104-alt-3.webp?v=1785734364
https://thestickerspace.com/products/katsukawa-shunei-the-actor-otani-oniji-iii-17621819-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
