Grapevines dominate the centre, with heavy clusters of grapes hanging among tendrils and leaves drawn in restrained grey ink. Dark ink defines the strongest contours, while touches of vermilion add the only warm accent against the muted palette. The composition is open and airy, with the vine's line carrying the eye across the panel.

Meaning & Symbolism

The album was built from copies of canonical Chinese ink paintings, so Tsunenobu's work was a deliberate exercise in absorbing the brushwork and structure of earlier masters. Studies like this functioned as a teaching curriculum for the Kano lineage, which served as painters to the shogunate. Each leaf records how classical motifs were studied, codified and passed down through the family's elite institutional training in seventeenth-century Japan.

Built to the Cut of a Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the vine, grapes and mount edge can be trimmed to the shape of the painting itself rather than sitting inside a standard border. Held close, the detail in the leaves and clusters reads clearly, which suits a piece of a scholarly album meant to be looked at up close.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/kano-tsunenobu-album-of-copies-of-chinese-paintings-17th-century-v7-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787963409
https://thestickerspace.com/products/kano-tsunenobu-album-of-copies-of-chinese-paintings-17th-century-v7-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
