Grey ink lines carry the landscape, with stylized ink-line waves and swirling cloud scrolls drifting across the surface. The palette is restrained: olive and cream fields, grey ink, and accents of vermilion and gold. A red seal impression sits on the panel, and the inscription 法橋探水齋, with the note 行年六十七歳 (age sixty-seven), records the artist's sign and his age at the time of painting.

Meaning & Symbolism

Mount Penglai is the Daoist paradise, a mythical abode of immortals that stands for eternal life and spiritual longing. The Eight Views of Xiao and Xiang, drawn from the rivers of southern China, capture moods of melancholy, beauty and transient nature. Set together, the two themes move between transcendence and the earthly landscape, inviting the viewer toward escape and inner contemplation. Tansui worked within the Kano school, the dominant painting lineage of early modern Japan, which blended Chinese ink-wash traditions with native Japanese sensibilities and served the ruling elite of the Edo period.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the composition keeps its own edges rather than sitting inside a frame. The scroll's vertical rhythm and the cloud and wave forms translate naturally to a shaped piece, and the seal and inscription read clearly at close range, where a sticker is seen and handled.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/kano-tansui-moritsune-mount-penglai-with-eight-views-of-xiao-and-xiang-19th-century-v17-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787963001
https://thestickerspace.com/products/kano-tansui-moritsune-mount-penglai-with-eight-views-of-xiao-and-xiang-19th-century-v17-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
