Dark green clouds drift across the upper field, and thin green streams wind through the gold below them. Autumn grasses rise in vertical clusters, with white chrysanthemum-like blossoms set among them and small red and purple wildflowers accenting the lower growth. Sage green and pale grey-white soften the layout, while crimson gives it its sharpest notes. The vertical arrangement echoes the panel structure of the folding screen the painting was made for.

Meaning & Symbolism

Flowers and grasses of the four seasons form a traditional theme in Japanese painting. Here, plants from different times of the year share one space, so the year's rhythm is shown all at once rather than in sequence. In Japanese art and thought, seasonal flora carries meaning about the impermanence of life and the cycle of the cosmos, and this grouping expresses a reverence for nature's continuity. Kano Mitsunobu worked within the Kano school, the dominant painting lineage of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, and this work reflects the technical precision and cultural authority of the Azuchi-Momoyama era.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its artwork, so the screen's clouds, streams and blossoms sit on the surface as they are drawn, with no border around them. The composition suits flat surfaces such as laptops, journals and windows, where its vertical panels and gold field read clearly at close range.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/kano-mitsunobu-flowers-and-grasses-of-the-four-seasons-late-16th-century-v7-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787958707
https://thestickerspace.com/products/kano-mitsunobu-flowers-and-grasses-of-the-four-seasons-late-16th-century-v7-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
