Riders lean into galloping horses, and each animal drives the eye toward the next, so the scene reads as motion rather than a still tableau. A rider swings a long mallet across the frame, and a red polo ball sits in the action as the focal point. The horses come in black, brown with a red bridle, and grey, which keeps the crowded group legible. The palette is restrained: warm parchment ground, vermilion red, charcoal black, with pale teal and dusty pink as quieter accents. The image is a cropped detail, so the figures run off the edges and the scene feels like a fragment of a longer event.

Meaning & Symbolism

Polo began as an aristocratic pastime in Central Asia, and it carried meaning as both martial training and leisure. Its riders show the physical control and coordination the sport demanded, and in painting it signalled nobility and prestige. Edo-period artists were drawn to foreign customs like this one, and this work reflects that appetite for distant practices. Kano Eisen'in Furunobu worked within the Kano school, the most influential lineage in Japanese painting, and this piece shows the school's disciplined brushwork applied to an international subject. The work is held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection.

Cut to the Outline of Its Own Motion

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, and this design rewards that. The diagonal of the riders and the arc of the mallet are the shapes that define the piece, so the cut traces the action itself rather than a border around it. Each sticker stands alone as a fragment of the scene, much like the cropped detail the painter chose. Applied to a laptop, journal, or any flat surface, the horsemen seem to ride straight out from the object they decorate.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/kano-eisenin-furunobu-tartars-playing-polo-early-18th-century-v4-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787958271
https://thestickerspace.com/products/kano-eisenin-furunobu-tartars-playing-polo-early-18th-century-v4-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
