Beside him a nurse in a crisp white uniform and cap balances the composition in white and cream. Further in, a patient rests in bed beneath a white blanket, wearing a blue robe, and a wooden chair with a green seat anchors the lower corner. The palette is restrained: cream, white, navy black, turquoise and green, all laid in the flat, clean tones of traditional woodblock work.

Meaning & Symbolism

Kuchi-e were frontispiece prints made to open literary magazines, and this one ran as the frontispiece to volume 1, number 8 of Bungei Kurabu in 1895. The subject, a Suirai shikan, or torpedo officer, marks the moment when Japan's navy was modernising at speed, and the print frames that change through a figure of disciplined formality. Its pairing of a military man with a nurse and a patient gives the scene a humane side alongside the martial one, a view of the Meiji period's social and military identity as it looked in print.

Where This Print Lives on a Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker takes its shape from the artwork itself, so the officer, nurse and bed are cut to their own outlines and lift cleanly from the backing. The horizontal format suits a flat surface where the scene can be read at a glance, and the image is best placed where a collector will want to look at it closely, such as a notebook cover or the lid of a case of prints and ephemera.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/kajita-hanko-the-torpedo-officer-suirai-shikan-frontispiece-illustration-from-the-literary-magazine-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KJTHNK-2X2-12-alt-3.webp?v=1785741025
https://thestickerspace.com/products/kajita-hanko-the-torpedo-officer-suirai-shikan-frontispiece-illustration-from-the-literary-magazine-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
