A red and white shibori-patterned robe and bamboo leaves on the robe carry much of the decoration, set against a palette of cream, coral orange, red, pale green and black. Dotted textures run through the printed surfaces, and the two figures sit close together at the centre, their attention fixed on the page in their hands.

Meaning & Symbolism

The print depicts a kesobumi, or "makeup letter," a form of secret correspondence in which the writing was done in invisible ink, typically rice water or makeup, and only became readable when the paper was heated. Lovers used the practice to keep their messages private, so the scene reads as a moment of romance and shared secrecy. Kajita Hanko (1870–1917) made the work in January 1906, and it stands as a record of the intimate social customs of early twentieth-century Japan, rendered through the medium of woodblock printing.

Built for the Sticker's Own Outline

A kiss-cut sticker follows the exact contour of its design, so the horizontal frame, the robe pattern and the two figures keep their own edges once they leave the sheet. Applied to a laptop, journal or window, the piece becomes a small, close-viewed object that rewards a second look, much like the letter it depicts, which only reveals its message to the reader who looks closely.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/kajita-hanko-love-letter-kesobumi-january-1906-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-KJTHNK-2X2-2-alt-3.webp?v=1785741408
https://thestickerspace.com/products/kajita-hanko-love-letter-kesobumi-january-1906-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
