Saint Peter emerges from a void-like background, his features illuminated by a sharp, directional light source that carves out the deep furrows of his brow and the wet, glistening quality of his eyes. The palette is restricted to earthy ochres, deep shadows, and stark highlights, concentrating the viewer's focus on the weathered texture of his skin and the expressive, clasped position of his hands.

Meaning & Symbolism

Produced around 1612–1613, this work captures the traditional narrative of the *Lacrimae Petri*, or the Tears of Saint Peter, following his denial of Christ. The image functions as a meditation on contrition and human frailty. Ribera departs from idealized religious iconography, opting instead for a gritty, uncompromising naturalism that emphasizes the physical reality of grief. It is an exploration of the psychological weight of guilt, rendered with a dramatic clarity that bridged the gap between Caravaggesque lighting and the burgeoning Spanish Baroque aesthetic.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

As a kiss-cut decal, the jagged, singular silhouette of this portrait removes the frame of the original canvas, allowing the intense, sorrowful gaze of the saint to interact directly with your immediate environment. The die-cut edge isolates the figure from his dark surroundings, forcing a sharper confrontation with the subject’s expression when applied to the flat, stationary surfaces of your journals or laptop lids.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/jusepe-de-ribera-called-lo-the-tears-of-saint-peter-ca-161213-v4-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-JSPD-2X2-7-front.webp?v=1789399377
https://thestickerspace.com/products/jusepe-de-ribera-called-lo-the-tears-of-saint-peter-ca-161213-v4-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
