Vibrant, fluid strokes define the scales and fins of the fish, which navigate through a sparse, airy arrangement of floral stems and leaves. The negative space is intentional, allowing the primary subjects to anchor the eye. Soft, tonal washes create a sense of depth, while precise line work emphasizes the interplay between the blooming petals and the rhythmic swimming of the aquatic figures.

Meaning & Symbolism

Jin Zhang, a prominent female artist of the Republican era, revitalized traditional motifs through her focus on the natural world. Flowers and fish together traditionally represent harmony and abundance, a classic auspicious theme in Chinese art. By translating the texture of silk and the layering of ink pigments into this modern medium, the design preserves the quiet, meditative quality inherent in the original scroll, reflecting the sophisticated aesthetic sensibilities of 1920s Shanghai art circles.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

The kiss-cut format allows this complex, organic illustration to exist as a singular, silhouette-driven object. By trimming exactly to the contours of the flowers and fish, the design sheds its rectangular framing, transforming the historical scroll into a standalone icon that follows the fluid, irregular boundaries of the artist's original ink lines.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/jin-zhang-flowers-and-fishes-dated-1920-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-front.webp?v=1788733914
https://thestickerspace.com/products/jin-zhang-flowers-and-fishes-dated-1920-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
