Vermilion dominates, appearing in the red maple tree, the red lattice fence and the kimono of two young attendants. The woman with the maple branch anchors the scene, and the crescent moon sits over soft bands of cloud. The characters 風流七小町 name the series, and a second inscription, 湖龍画, is set in a rectangular cartouche.

Meaning & Symbolism

The Seven Komachi series takes its name from Ono no Komachi, the ninth-century poet whose legend is tied to rain-prayer rituals. Koryūsai does not illustrate her story literally. Instead, the mitate, or allusive, scenes recast her legend in the contemporary life of late eighteenth-century Edo. Here the maple, the stream and the veranda evoke the anxious wait for rain, with the figures appealing to the sky. The moon above the clouds signals that the rain has not yet come.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the composition is not boxed in by a rectangle. The lattice fence, the branch and the attendants' kimono edges read as one shape against whatever surface they land on. Collectors of Edo prints will recognise the Komachi reference at once, and the moon and stream become the prayer itself once the legend is known.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/isoda-korysai-one-of-the-seven-komachi-amagoi-praying-for-rain-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-SDKRY-2X2-52-alt-3.webp?v=1785746792
https://thestickerspace.com/products/isoda-korysai-one-of-the-seven-komachi-amagoi-praying-for-rain-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
