The sign's name and designation sit at the centre of the composition, with no decorative border, illustration or secondary text pulling attention away from them. Clear lettering and numerals do all the work, so the eye reads the identifier first and the country second. The layout is orderly and symmetrical, the way a road sign is laid out to be read at a glance from a moving vehicle.

Meaning & Symbolism

The "IRL" prefix is the international code for Ireland, and the "L" prefix in Irish road numbering marks a regional road, a class of route that links towns and districts beneath the national road network. Reading the sign as a designation rather than a picture is the point of the piece: it stands for a specific stretch of Irish road, identified by number, the way a catalogued item is identified by its reference. The design nods to Ireland through its signage conventions rather than through scenery or symbols.

Designed for the Die-Cut Format

A die-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the sign's shape becomes the edge of the object itself. Because the artwork is a single identifier with no background to frame it, the cut line and the design are one and the same. Peeled from its backing and placed on a laptop, a notebook or a collection case, the sticker presents the designation as a standalone marker, the way a sign stands alone at the roadside.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/irl-l1522-ireland-road-sign-sticker-vinyl-die-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-RLL-WHITED-1DTT1-front.webp?v=1793588962
