He wears a white kimono marked with brown crests, and its cream and charcoal tones hold the eye against the olive green ground. The red of his smoking pipe and a hanging red paper lantern provides the strongest accents in the image. Beneath him sits a checkered low table, and a pair of geta sandals rests nearby. The patterned surfaces contrast with the open space around the figure, so the actor remains the clear focal point.

Meaning & Symbolism

Ippyotei Yoshikuni, also known as Toyokawa Yoshikuni, made this ukiyo-e woodblock print in the mid-nineteenth century, during the Edo period. The Ichimura line was one of the prominent acting families of Edo, and its members were closely tied to the Ichimura-za theatre. Portraits like this one circulated among theatre audiences, who followed favourite actors the way fans follow performers today. The pipe and the relaxed posture recast a celebrity as a private person, and the artwork lets the viewer share that quiet moment.

Why the Kiss-Cut Sticker Suits This Design

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, which allows the seated figure, the lantern or the bench to define the edge of the piece. Because the print is a vertical rectangle with a single central figure, the cut lets the actor stand out from the page as a silhouette rather than a framed image. Held close, the sticker keeps the crests, the checkered table and the red accents in clear view, so the detail of the woodblock style comes through at arm's length.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/ippyotei-yoshikuni-an-actor-of-the-ichimura-line-sitting-on-a-shogi-wooden-bench-and-holding-a-pipe-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-PPYYSH-2X2-2-alt-3.webp?v=1785754494
https://thestickerspace.com/products/ippyotei-yoshikuni-an-actor-of-the-ichimura-line-sitting-on-a-shogi-wooden-bench-and-holding-a-pipe-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
