The figure dominates the frame with a raw, focused intensity, rendered through the precise linework and traditional color palettes characteristic of 18th-century woodblock techniques. The composition balances the physical stature of the wrestler with the stylized theatricality of the Kabuki stage, creating a portrait that emphasizes character over caricature.

Historical Context and Theatrical Significance

Ippitsusai Bunchō was active during a transformative era of Japanese art, and this work serves as a prime example of his signature approach to portraiture. By depicting Sakata Hongoro II as a wrestler, the print bridges the gap between the refined world of theater and the gritty, visceral appeal of combat sports in Edo Japan. It captures a fleeting, high-stakes moment of a performance, preserving the actor's distinct presence and the cultural zeitgeist of the period.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

The kiss-cut format follows the silhouette of the wrestler, allowing the actor’s dramatic stance to stand independently on your chosen surface. Because the vinyl is cut precisely to the outline of the figure, this sticker functions as a portable, high-contrast vignette of Japanese art history. It transforms the historical woodblock print into a sharp, graphic accent, enabling you to layer the legacy of 1770s Kabuki theater onto your journals, laptops, or any flat indoor surface.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/ippitsusai-bunch-actor-sakata-hongoro-ii-as-a-wrestler-in-a-play-ca-1770-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-PPTBNC-2X2-12-alt-3.webp?v=1785811249
https://thestickerspace.com/products/ippitsusai-bunch-actor-sakata-hongoro-ii-as-a-wrestler-in-a-play-ca-1770-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
