A waterfall tumbles down the rock face, and a red-roofed pavilion sits at the base, small against the scale of the stone. Pine trees anchor the lower register. The palette is restrained: ochre silk, stone grey, moss green, a cream border, and a single note of vermilion red at the pavilion. The signature and seal sit at the lower right, quietly balancing the composition.

Meaning & Symbolism

The painting belongs to the Nanga school, the literati tradition that Ike no Taiga pioneered in the Edo period by blending Chinese ink technique with a distinctly Japanese sensibility. Its paired seasons, lush summer against stark winter isolation, express the passage of time and the impermanence of life. For the bunjin, or Japanese literati, scenes like this offered an intellectual retreat from worldly concerns and a route to spiritual renewal through contemplation of the changing wilderness.

Cut to the Shape of the Scene

A kiss-cut sticker takes the outline of the artwork itself, so the mountain, waterfall and pavilion can stand alone on a surface without a rectangular border around them. The vermilion pavilion and pine silhouettes read clearly at small scale, making this a piece to place where it can be seen up close and returned to, the way a scroll is unrolled and studied.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/ike-no-taiga-landscapes-in-summer-and-winter-18th-century-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787950888
https://thestickerspace.com/products/ike-no-taiga-landscapes-in-summer-and-winter-18th-century-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
