The actor's costume carries the mimasu, three nested squares, a geometric motif that repeats the composition's own concentric logic. Folded salmon-pink cloth sits beside the figure, and a small dark flower motif and a red artist's seal mark the edges of the panel. Inscribed poems fill the surrounding space in the manner of fine-art surimono, so text and image share the frame.

Meaning & Symbolism

The mimasu crest identifies the Ichikawa family lineage, and the persimmon-red costume signals the bold, larger-than-life style of the Shibaraku role. The play is tied to the annual November kaomise ("face-showing") productions, when leading actors presented new roles to the public. The print belongs to the Edo period (1791–1859), when woodblock portraiture carried Kabuki stars into homes and collections, and it preserves the expressive characterization and dramatic presence that defined the theatre of its time.

Cut to the Outline of the Print

A kiss-cut sticker is cut around its own edge, so the image keeps its silhouette rather than sitting on a plain rectangle. That suits a design built on a strong outline: the olive contours and the red figure read as a single shape, the way the actor commands the stage. The piece works for collectors of Japanese woodblock art and for anyone following Kabuki, and it stays with the sticker's own shape wherever it is placed.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/ichikawa-danjr-vii-self-portrait-of-danjuro-vii-in-a-shibaraku-performance-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-CHKDNJ-2X2-2-alt-3.webp?v=1785812602
https://thestickerspace.com/products/ichikawa-danjr-vii-self-portrait-of-danjuro-vii-in-a-shibaraku-performance-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
