Gold and ink pigments create a visual depth where the written word appears to float atop stylized floral or vegetal motifs. The layout prioritizes the elegance of the sweeping strokes, demonstrating the precise control of an artist who functioned as both a calligrapher and a master of the decorative arts. The negative space is intentionally balanced, ensuring the dense, dark ink of the poetry anchors the shimmering, metallic substrate.

Cultural Significance and Origins

Dating to the Edo period, this work reflects the refined artistic output of the Kōetsu-bon—the collaborative printed books produced by Hon'ami Kōetsu and Tawaraya Sōtatsu. The design draws directly from the Shinkokinshū, a seminal collection of ancient and modern Japanese poetry. By integrating classical literature with lavish, gold-leaf painting, Kōetsu transformed the page into a total work of art. This piece serves as a bridge between the high-culture tradition of courtly poetry and the bold, graphic sensibilities that would come to define Japanese aesthetic movements for centuries.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

As a kiss-cut decal, this design is precisely contoured to follow the organic flow of the original scroll’s edge. By isolating this specific snippet of poetry from the larger handscroll, the sticker transforms a museum-grade archival composition into a portable graphic. The cut allows the calligraphy to exist as a singular, silhouette-like object, detached from the rectangular confines of a standard frame and ready to be placed as a deliberate, artistic accent on your preferred flat surfaces.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/honami-ketsu-twelve-poems-from-the-new-collection-of-poems-ancient-and-modern-ca-1620-v5-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-front.webp?v=1788796579
https://thestickerspace.com/products/honami-ketsu-twelve-poems-from-the-new-collection-of-poems-ancient-and-modern-ca-1620-v5-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
