The eye lands first on the procession of walking townspeople in kimono, which fills the street in a steady horizontal band. Above and behind it, seated figures sit on a raised wooden platform, half-hidden behind bamboo blinds. Windows and blinds frame the viewer's position, so the scene reads as a view through a screen. A small vermilion seal and a sign bearing the characters 山形屋 mark the page as a dated, signed piece of Edo print culture.

Meaning & Symbolism

The image is about looking and being looked at. The courtesans, servants and child attendants at the centre of the parade display rank through their dress and placement, while the clients behind the blinds watch from a position of privilege. Moronobu, one of the foundational masters of ukiyo-e, uses this arrangement to show the social hierarchy of the "floating world," the urban pleasure culture of Edo. The series it belongs to gives a record of Edo-period city life in the late 1600s.

Framing the Spectacle on a Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the wooden lattice, the blinds and the procession can stand alone on a surface without a border around them. Because the print depends on the viewer peering through a frame, a sticker that follows the shape of the scene keeps that sense of a sheltered view intact. Each piece is a small window onto Edo, placed where you choose to watch it.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/hishikawa-moronobu-the-twelfth-scene-from-scenes-of-the-pleasure-quarter-at-yoshiwara-in-edo-late-17th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-HSHMRN-2X2-48-alt-3.webp?v=1785813473
https://thestickerspace.com/products/hishikawa-moronobu-the-twelfth-scene-from-scenes-of-the-pleasure-quarter-at-yoshiwara-in-edo-late-17th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
