The composition is built on a horizontal panel, with a row of vertical lattice bars cutting across the upper field. Behind that latticed railing, two women are displayed, their figures drawn with economical, flowing contour lines. Below and beside them, a wooden staircase leads down into the street, where a man in a striped kimono wears a sword, a man in a pine-patterned kimono walks past, and a young woman in a kimono moves through the crowd. The striped rhythms of the kimono patterns and the repeated bars of the window give the print its visual structure.

Meaning & Symbolism

The barred windows are the central image. This practice, known as harimise, placed courtesans on display for customers in the street, and the print records that arrangement as a daily feature of Edo life. Moronobu, one of the foundational masters of the Ukiyo-e movement, uses the scene to show the social fabric of the period: residents, customers, samurai and townspeople sharing a single thoroughfare. The work belongs to the "floating world" (ukiyo) tradition, which turned the pleasures and routines of urban life into art. Its late seventeenth-century date, around 1680, places it at the beginning of that tradition's flowering.

Cut to the Outline of Its Own Scene

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its artwork, so the lattice, the figures and the staircase can stand alone on whatever surface they meet. Moronobu's lines were built to be read at close range, and a sticker brings that intimacy to a laptop lid, a journal cover or a notebook, where the print is seen up close and handled daily. The sticker turns a historical record of the street into an object that travels with its owner.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/hishikawa-moronobu-street-scene-in-yoshiwara-late-17th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-HSHMRN-2X2-36-alt-3.webp?v=1785813909
https://thestickerspace.com/products/hishikawa-moronobu-street-scene-in-yoshiwara-late-17th-century-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
