Its structure is built from a horizontal rectangular panel and vertical bars, with four figures in kimono positioned behind the bars. A standing man in a patterned kimono, a crouching figure in a striped robe, and a figure holding a fan in a decorated robe give the composition its rhythm. The striped patterning of the robes repeats through the scene, and a small inscription, 菱川師宣圖, marks the work as Moronobu's.

Meaning & Symbolism

Kemari was a communal game played by the Japanese aristocracy, where players kept a ball aloft with their feet rather than racing to score. Its value lay in grace and sustained cooperation, so the print's figures read as much as a ritual of courtesy as a sport. Moronobu, a master of the Edo period, worked in ukiyo-e during the 17th century, and this print preserves the leisure and social ceremony of that era, with its themes of tradition and historical Japanese heritage.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to the outline of its own design, so the figures and bars of this print stand alone on the surface they are applied to. Its flat, close-to-the-eye format suits the detail of the robes and the inscription, which reward a closer look the way a woodblock print rewards a viewer leaning in.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/hishikawa-moronobu-games-of-football-being-played-by-nobles-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-HSHMRN-2X2-10-alt-3.webp?v=1785815116
https://thestickerspace.com/products/hishikawa-moronobu-games-of-football-being-played-by-nobles-unknown-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
