A diagonal branch carries the eye across the scene, with rose blossoms opening along its length and oval leaves in leaf green setting off the pink. The sparrow sits in the middle of the arrangement, its bird grey wings and navy head drawing attention. Nothing competes with the bird and the flowers, so the scene reads as one quiet moment of observation.

Meaning & Symbolism

In East Asian painting, birds and flowers together often stand for the passing of time and the balance of natural forces. The sparrow is a common bird of both fields and village gardens, and paired with the rose it brings together seasonal change, endurance and quiet reflection. Gyokuhō worked within the Japanese tradition of painters who studied the natural world closely, and this piece shows his precise handling of both plumage and botany. It is held today in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection.

Cut to the Sparrow's Outline

A kiss-cut sticker follows the edge of the artwork, so the sparrow and the branch can stand on their own without a border around them. Because the design is cut to its own outline, the sheet shows the composition as Gyokuhō painted it, bird and blossom on silk, now shrunk to the scale of a surface you choose.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/hasegawa-gyokuh-roses-and-field-sparrow-19th-century-v11-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787947872
https://thestickerspace.com/products/hasegawa-gyokuh-roses-and-field-sparrow-19th-century-v11-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
