The design is a rich tapestry of symbolism, reflecting the city's history, heritage, and valor.

Shield Design

The central element is the shield, divided horizontally (coupé). The top section, rendered in gold (or), bears a powerful black lion (lion passant de sable) in the Flemish style, its claws and tongue a bold red (gueules). The lower portion is silver (argent) and features a stylized dolphin (or fish) lying horizontally (couché) in blue (d’azur), with its crest and ear also in red (gueules).

Supporter and Decorations

The shield is supported by a marine man, a figure clad in armor, embodying Dunkirk's deep-rooted maritime tradition. The coat of arms is further adorned with decorations signifying honors awarded to the city, including the Croix de Guerre with palmes from 1917, the Légion d'Honneur cross (awarded in 1919), and, in some versions, the Distinguished Service Cross (USA).

Motto

The coat of arms proudly displays two mottos. The first, "1793 – A bien mérité de la Patrie," acknowledges the city's heroic contributions. The second, "Ville héroïque, sert d’exemple à toute la nation," meaning "Heroic city, serves as an example to the whole nation," formally recognizes Dunkirk's role as a symbol of resilience.

Symbolism

The design elements are steeped in meaning. The lion, a symbol of the County of Flanders, represents Dunkirk's historical ties to the region. The dolphin, derived from the city's early seal and a tribute to the Dauphin, represents the city’s fishing heritage and its importance. The marine man emphasizes Dunkirk's enduring maritime history and its identity as a major port. The medals underscore the city's bravery and endurance throughout history.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/grandes-armes-de-la-ville-de-dunkerque-1917-france-coat-of-arms-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-2-inch-white-position1.webp?v=1764557223
https://thestickerspace.com/products/grandes-armes-de-la-ville-de-dunkerque-1917-france-coat-of-arms-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
