Dark, muted tones dominate the background, allowing the intricate details of the subject’s period-accurate cravat and tailored coat to emerge through subtle shifts in light and shadow. The brushwork emphasizes the texture of the fabric and the piercing, intelligent gaze of the sitter, creating a stark contrast between the subject’s silhouette and the void surrounding him.

Meaning & Symbolism

Executed during a period of transition in Goya’s career, this portrait serves as a testament to the artist’s role within the upper echelons of Spanish society. Martínez, a man of significant wealth and a patron of the arts, appears here as a symbol of the Enlightenment era—rational, composed, and intellectually engaged. The portrait functions as both a record of personal status and a demonstration of Goya’s growing mastery in capturing the psychological depth of his contemporaries.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

Because this design is rendered as a kiss-cut sticker, the complex, organic silhouette of Martínez’s frame is precisely tracked by the cut line. This allows the detailed portrait to detach from its backing as a singular, contoured object that stands apart from the surrounding surface. The specific outline highlights the focus on the subject’s features, transforming a historical museum piece into a sharp, graphic element ready to be applied to flat surfaces like journals, laptops, or windows.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/goya-francisco-de-goya-y-sebastin-martnez-y-prez-17471800-1792-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-GYFRN-2X2-17-front.webp?v=1789501122
https://thestickerspace.com/products/goya-francisco-de-goya-y-sebastin-martnez-y-prez-17471800-1792-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
