The painted surface carries a long-tailed bird perched on a branch and clusters of magnolia blossoms, with a leaf-and-branch pattern running across the leaf. The inscribed guard sticks, styled after bamboo, frame the composition at its edges. The palette is tonal throughout: light grey, mid grey and charcoal, so the drawn line and the shading of feathers and petals carry the image.

Meaning & Symbolism

The fan is a worked object as much as a painting. Bird and blossom subjects were a staple of Chinese court painting, and the magnolia brings associations of spring and renewal into the composition. The attribution to Giuseppe Castiglione places the work in the 18th century, when this Jesuit painter served at the Qing court and brought European training in naturalistic observation together with Chinese brush traditions. Fans of this period were made to be held, displayed and given, which is why the painted surface reads as a finished miniature rather than a background.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

A kiss-cut sticker is cut to its own outline, so the fan shape of the design becomes the edge of the object itself. The pleats and the folded leaf stay whole, and the bird and blossoms sit inside a silhouette that matches the painting. Placed on a laptop lid or the cover of a journal, it reads as a small fan opened onto the surface, a piece of court art set against modern everyday objects.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/giuseppe-castiglione-lang-fan-18th-century-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787945078
https://thestickerspace.com/products/giuseppe-castiglione-lang-fan-18th-century-v1-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
