The design, granted by Royal Decree in 1925, is a powerful visual representation of the village's identity.

Visual Elements

The core of the design is a gold (or) shield. Dominating the field are two black (sable) goat horns, artfully arranged in a saltire, forming an X-shape. Centered at the intersection of these horns is a prominent black cross, further anchoring the design.

Meaning and Symbolism

The design's heart lies in its symbolism. The crossed goat horns, central to the emblem, are a direct reference to the village's name, "Giethoorn," which translates to "goat horn" in Dutch. This connection originates from a local legend that tells of the discovery of numerous goat horns in the soil by early settlers, remnants of a catastrophic storm surge in 1170.

The black cross at the center of the design carries its own significance. It is believed to represent the Mennonite Church, which played a crucial role in the development of Giethoorn. The church provided land and support to refugees who settled in the village, fostering its growth and unique character.

The combination of these elements creates a coat of arms that is both visually striking and rich in meaning, encapsulating the history and heritage of Giethoorn.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/giethoorn-wapen-1925-netherlands-coat-of-arms-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-2-inch-white-position1.webp?v=1764555837
https://thestickerspace.com/products/giethoorn-wapen-1925-netherlands-coat-of-arms-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
