A standing woman in a jade green silk robe with long sleeves fills the centre, her red-tasselled sash a sharp accent against the ochre and ivory ground. Beside her, a branch of pale pink peony blooms in full view, its leaves in soft leaf green. The palette is restrained, with muted greens and pinks set against the warm tone of the silk, so every colour reads as deliberate. Painted in ink and colour on silk, the work carries the soft, even modelling of its period, and the inscription 天明乙巳仲秋 (mid-autumn, Tenmei 5, 1785) sits within the picture as a dated signature.

Meaning & Symbolism

The pairing of Yanji and Yang Guifei sets two kinds of virtue side by side. The orchid stands for the grace and integrity of a scholar in retreat, while the peony signals prosperity, nobility, and the opulent romance linked to the Tang consort Yang Guifei. Together, the figures join feminine allure with Confucian ideals of conduct, a theme central to the bijin-ga tradition. Komai Genki, a pupil of the Maruyama school, was known for these portraits of beautiful women, and this 1785 work shows how he blended the naturalism of the Kyoto school with the romanticised figures of Chinese painting during the mid-Edo period.

Cut to the Shape of the Scroll

A kiss-cut sticker follows its own outline, so the figures and flowers lift cleanly off the backing as a single shape. Each piece keeps the painting's own edges, which makes it a natural fit for a laptop lid, a journal cover, or a notebook margin, where the image can be seen up close and handled as an object of its own.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/genki-komai-ki-yanji-with-orchids-and-yang-guifei-with-peonies-1785-v5-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-unknown-alt-3.webp?v=1787945390
https://thestickerspace.com/products/genki-komai-ki-yanji-with-orchids-and-yang-guifei-with-peonies-1785-v5-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
