The architecture is rendered with a precarious, stylized geometry, featuring slender columns and arched niches that fracture as the saint gestures. Saint John is positioned as the vertical anchor, clad in flowing, heavy drapery that contrasts with the jagged, falling masonry surrounding him. The palette relies on deep reds, earthy ochres, and the brilliant, reflective quality of the gilded background, creating a visual tension between the solid saint and the disintegrating pagan monument.

Iconographic Significance

Dating to approximately 1370, this work reflects the narrative intensity characteristic of the Fabriano school. It serves as a visual testament to the triumph of Christianity over classical antiquity, a common motif in late medieval hagiography. The collapsing temple represents the literal and symbolic erasure of old idols, with the Saint’s composed posture highlighting his divine authority over the chaotic collapse. Ghissi’s use of punch-work in the gold leaf and the meticulous detailing of the temple’s ornamental carvings underscore the era’s devotion to both theological narrative and decorative precision.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

Transformed into a kiss-cut sticker, the complex silhouette of the crumbling temple and Saint John’s figure gains a new level of graphic intensity. Because the decal is cut precisely to the outline of the architectural ruin and the saint’s profile, the jagged edges of the artwork dictate the shape of the object itself. This removes the frame of the original tempera panel, allowing the dramatic narrative to migrate from the gallery wall to your own personal surface, where the sharp interaction between the saint and his falling backdrop is isolated for close inspection.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/francescuccio-ghissi-saint-john-the-evangelist-causes-a-pagan-temple-to-collapse-ca-1370-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-FRNGHS-2X2-1N10W-front.webp?v=1789515390
https://thestickerspace.com/products/francescuccio-ghissi-saint-john-the-evangelist-causes-a-pagan-temple-to-collapse-ca-1370-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
