A sword with a yellow hilt and crossguard stands point-up at the centre, and a leaf-green laurel wreath encircles it. The flat, clearly separated colours give the emblem sharp contrast against the stripes.

Meaning & Symbolism

The flag belongs to Batavia, the colonial city that was the centre of Dutch rule in the East Indies in the nineteenth century. The sword stands for military authority and the laurel wreath for honour, both common devices in the emblems of the period. The design was recorded in Johnson's Chart of the Flags and National Emblems of the World, published in 1864, which is the source of this artwork.

Kiss-Cut Sticker Shape

A kiss-cut sticker keeps the outline of the flag and leaves the backing whole, so it peels cleanly from its sheet. The sharp stripes and emblem read well on smooth flat surfaces such as a laptop lid, a journal cover or a window indoors, where the historic design can be seen clearly.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/flag-of-batavia-dutch-east-indies-johnsons-chart-of-the-flags-and-national-emblems-of-the-world-1864-netherlands-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-98058315855645679202-front.webp?v=1786525788
https://thestickerspace.com/products/flag-of-batavia-dutch-east-indies-johnsons-chart-of-the-flags-and-national-emblems-of-the-world-1864-netherlands-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
