Catharina van Alexandrië - 1589 - 1615 - STICKER Vinyl Kiss-Cut Decal
Heilige Familie met de H. Catharina van Alexandrië - Kiss-Cut Sticker Design

This design showcases a 16th-century engraving by Dominicus Custos, depicting the Holy Family alongside Saint Catherine of Alexandria in a dense, masterfully etched scene.

Visual Elements & Composition

The composition follows the intricate, high-contrast style of Northern Mannerist printmaking. Custos utilizes fine, rhythmic hatching to define the sculptural volume of the figures and the deep shadows of the architectural backdrop. The central arrangement creates a triangular stability, with the figures of Mary and the Christ Child serving as the anchor, while Saint Catherine appears at the periphery, distinguished by her traditional attributes. The lines are sharp and deliberate, characteristic of late Renaissance copperplate engraving, capturing both the softness of fabric and the hard texture of stone surfaces with exacting precision.

Meaning & Symbolism

The print reflects a period of transition in European art, bridging late-Renaissance devotion with the dramatic flourishes of the early Baroque. Saint Catherine is identifiable by the broken wheel, representing her martyrdom, a common motif in religious iconography from the 1589–1615 era. The presence of the Holy Family alongside a saint emphasizes the communion of saints, a hallmark of Counter-Reformation imagery meant to inspire contemplative reverence. Custos, an Augsburg-based printmaker, demonstrates the period's obsession with technical complexity and the dissemination of religious narratives through portable, highly detailed master prints.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

Because this design is rendered as a kiss-cut sticker, the complex, jagged silhouette of the original engraving’s subject matter is preserved perfectly in the negative space. The sticker follows the precise outline of the figures rather than a standard geometric shape, allowing the historical etching to exist as a floating, self-contained icon. It presents the archival density of a 400-year-old print on a modern surface, creating a stark visual contrast between the antique, monochromatic line work and the clean, contemporary border of the decal.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/dominicus-custos-heilige-familie-met-de-h-catharina-van-alexandri-1589-1615-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-DMNCST-2X2-38-alt-3.webp?v=1788613877
https://thestickerspace.com/products/dominicus-custos-heilige-familie-met-de-h-catharina-van-alexandri-1589-1615-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
