Thick, expressive black outlines define the figures, capturing the dramatic tension of the interaction. Christ stands as the central anchor, draped in flowing vestments, while Thomas leans in with a look of intense, analytical focus. The background maintains a flattened, non-perspectival depth common to the period, allowing the anatomy of the figures to dominate the frame. Every mark reflects the laborious effort of the woodblock cutter’s chisel, resulting in a raw, graphic texture that prioritizes silhouette and gesture over fluid realism.

Historical Significance

Originating from Amsterdam in 1523, this piece by Doen Pietersz. serves as a window into the Reformation-era preoccupation with tangible evidence and faith. The scene illustrates the biblical account from the Gospel of John, where Thomas demands physical proof of the Resurrection. By depicting this moment of tactile verification, Pietersz. engages with themes of doubt, revelation, and the human desire for objective truth. It is a snapshot of early modern graphic storytelling, where theological debate was translated into accessible, reproducible art for a burgeoning merchant and devout class.

The Artwork as a Silhouette

The kiss-cut format isolates these historical figures from their original printed borders, allowing the dynamic interplay between Christ and Thomas to act as a free-standing graphic. Because the decal follows the contours of the woodcut’s aggressive linework, the image sits cleanly against your personal gear, transforming an ancient religious motif into a sharp, self-contained emblem of curiosity and conviction.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/doen-pietersz-amsterdam-christus-verschijnt-aan-de-ongelovige-tomas-1523-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-DNPTR-2X2-4-alt-3.webp?v=1788646046
https://thestickerspace.com/products/doen-pietersz-amsterdam-christus-verschijnt-aan-de-ongelovige-tomas-1523-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
