Muted earth tones dominate the palette, allowing the focus to remain on the interplay between the animals’ muscular forms and the sweeping gestures of the figures. There is no rigid frame, as the composition emphasizes open space and the kinetic energy of the mounts, creating a sense of fleeting action frozen in time.

Meaning & Symbolism

Executed between 1669 and 1717, this piece reflects the seventeenth-century fascination with military life and the technical mastery of equine anatomy. Maas was celebrated for his ability to translate the chaos of a skirmish or a cavalry drill into a coherent visual narrative. The subjects represent the era’s preoccupation with status, mobility, and the martial prowess associated with the equestrian elite, serving as both a document of period uniform and a testament to the artist's keen observation of animal behavior under pressure.

On the Kiss-Cut Sticker

Because the sticker is cut to the specific outline of this equestrian scene, the figures appear to emerge directly from the surface they occupy. This custom-contoured edge removes the distraction of a rectangular border, allowing the horses’ silhouettes to interact with the lines of your laptop or journal cover. The design’s expansive, fluid composition is contained entirely within the shape of the print, making the action feel immediate and portable.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0493/3949/8646/files/dirk-maas-unknown-ruiters-1669-1717-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal-TSS-STICK-DRKMS-2X2-27-alt-3.webp?v=1788639645
https://thestickerspace.com/products/dirk-maas-unknown-ruiters-1669-1717-sticker-vinyl-kiss-cut-decal
